Linda Jo Smith, 77, passed away on January 18, 2026, in West Hills, California. Born on April 1, 1948, in Kingstree, South Carolina, she lived a life marked by dedication to her family, her community, and her career.

Linda Jo graduated from Tomlinson High School in Kingstree in 1965. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she attended Cortez Peters Business School. Her early professional years included managing a local portrait studio and working in campus security at Trinity College—roles that reflected her strong work ethic and commitment to service.

Her career took a defining turn when she joined the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO), where she broke new ground as the company's first female printer. Linda Jo later transitioned into the Government Relations office at PEPCO, where she remained until her retirement in 2011. Over the course of her 32-year tenure with the company, she earned the respect of colleagues and peers alike for her professionalism and pioneering spirit.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Linda Jo was deeply committed to community service and activism. She was widely known throughout Washington, D.C.—especially in her beloved Ward 7—for her tireless efforts to uplift others. She was known for her organizing and leadership efforts on such projects as The Anacostia River Clean Up, National Night Out, Project Harvest, Food For Families, Toys for Tots, and many others. She chaired the Benning Ridge Civic Association, the Sixth District Citizen's Advisory Council, and So Others Might Eat (SOME) board for many years. Her contributions were recognized with numerous awards and accolades over the years, honoring both her leadership and generosity.

Linda Jo's warmth and compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She was a loving mother to her daughter Shareda L. Smith and a proud grandmother to Jabari M. Ward. She is also survived by her sister Louisa Richards and brother-in-law Phillip Richards; and by her brother Kenneth Richardson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph K. Smith; her mother Mary F. Richardson; father Sammie Richardson Sr.; brother Sammie Richardson Jr.; and sister Angela Richardson.

Linda Jo's legacy of kindness, strength, and service will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
