L.Louise Hess Altes, age 79, of Pittsburgh, died Saturday January 17th after a long illness.
Born in 1946 in Newark, NJ to Lillian and William Hess, L.Louise was the middle child of 5 children. In the 1960s, she moved to New York City, where she met the love of her life, James Altes, when they both worked at Weltz Ad Services, and they married at The Cloisters in 1970.
In 1971, Jim and L.Louise moved to D.C., where they lived on a boat before moving to Adams Morgan where they raised their 2 children and became involved in neighborhood organization.
In 2002, they retired to Pittsburgh. Lifetime lovers and supporters of folk music, Jim and L.Louise started Friendship House Concerts in their home and were thrilled to host many wonderful musicians over 16 years and more than 100 house concerts. They were proud to be the second house concert members of Fair Trade Music, a campaign of the traveling musicians union Local 1000 IAM.
L.Louise was a talented artist and graphic designer, and family and friends delighted in her whimsical jewelry and Christmas cards.
She loved art in all its forms, and delighted in championing artists and performers. She and Jim were regular attendants of Pittsburgh Playwrights, Pittsburgh Poetry Society, and Beth Corning's dance productions.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James, her two daughters, Kristin (Jerry) Allison of Columbus, OH and Rebecca (Thomas) Altes of Pittsburgh, PA, 2 granddaughters, Samantha and Erin Allison, and a host of other relatives and treasured friends.
Due to a deep and abiding belief in science, L.Louise donated her brain to Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and body to the Maryland Anatomy Gift Registry.
In memory of L.Louise, please support your local arts. There will be a celebration of life later this spring.
