On Saturday, December 6, 2025, the Lord gently called home His faithful servant Lois Ruth (Prokopy) Doring. After a lifetime of joyful service to Christ and His Church, Lois now rests from her labors and lives forever with her Savior. She joins her dear husband, mother, father, and brother.

Lois was born in 1933 to the Reverend Paul and Mathilde (Erdmann) Prokopy in Albany, New York. In middle school she moved with her family to Manchester, Connecticut, where she met her life-long best friend Barb and graduated from Manchester High School. Both would later marry Lutheran pastors.

Lois graduated from Concordia Jr. College in Bronxville, New York, Wagner College on Staten Island, and Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois. It was during her first year at Concordia in Bronxville as a cheerleader that she met a basketball loving pre-seminarian, Arthur. They enjoyed college in Bronxville and summers working at Lutherland in the Poconos.

After graduation, Lois became a teacher and Arther, a pastor. Lois' teaching positions were as a kindergarten teacher at St. John's Lutheran School on Staten Island, New York, and then as a first-grade teacher at Hudson Maxim School in Hopatcong, New Jersey.

Lois Prokopy and the Reverend Arthur Doring were married in 1958. A partnership that spanned 62 years, Art was called to begin The Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Stanhope, New Jersey, and Lois founded Our Savior Nursery School. As director of the school for 31 years, Lois served the Lord faithfully for years alongside her husband.

Lois was committed to providing a caring Christian educational environment for young school children. Thousands of students attended Our Savior Nursery School from 1971 until 2025. Seeking to best prepare students for life-long learning, Lois encouraged teachers and other directors, continuously learning and sharing best teaching practices. Her efforts were recognized with LSA's Administrator of the Year award and the LCMS New Jersey District's Servant of Christ award.

Lois prayed daily for her friends, family, church members, and all those in need. Lois and Art actively shared Jesus in many opportunities throughout their 62 years of marriage as they traveled throughout the country and world. They drove a VW camper across the U.S.; they took Amtrak to Florida, cruises to Alaska, and planes to countries like Japan, Greece, Turkey, and Israel. If they pitched a tent next to you, it's likely you would hear about Jesus. They enjoyed all things LCMS including Concordia Bronxville, LEA, LWML, Walther League, and gatherings with colleagues and friends.

Maine became one of their favorite places to vacation. They gathered there for many years with their children Lisa and David, their spouses Jon and Suelyn, and with grandchildren Sarah, Anna, Micah, Kaethe, Griffin, and Jackson. "Grammy" loved swimming, lobster, boating, games, making lists, and being together. She made a final trip to Maine this past summer with family.

Grammy was a fantastic rummy card player, could hit a wiffle ball and run the bases, and always had a craft to do and a book to share. She was most memorable as a pretend Komodo dragon. Grammy was an amazing mother, wife, and grandmother. She was loving, encouraging, persistent, creative, fun, and most of all forgiving. Grammy and Grampy were the best.

In recent years Lois made her home in California with Lisa and her family who appreciated the gift of caring for the mother and grandmother who had spent a lifetime caring for others. While she never got used to California palm trees, Lois enjoyed gathering with family for meals, worship, sunsets at the beach, and beating everyone at cards.

Lois is now resting in the arms of Jesus reunited with her husband and her own parents whom she longed to see again. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die." (John 11:25-26)

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 20th at 10:30 am at The Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Stanhope, New Jersey. A committal will be held at a later date in Brooklyn, New York.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to The Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Stanhope, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and/or Tuscarora Inn and Conference Center in Mt. Bethel, Pennsylvania.
