Lori Ann Noordergraaf

1969 - 2026

Lori Ann Noordergraaf, 56, of Concord, New Hampshire, passed away on March 13, 2026.

Lori was born on May 22, 1969, in Plymouth, New Hampshire, and adopted at birth by Mary and Albert Zych of Manchester, New Hampshire, where she was raised. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Keene State College, followed by a Master's in Education from Antioch New England Graduate School. She also completed numerous additional certifications in autism, occupational therapy, and related fields—reflecting her lifelong dedication to teaching and supporting children with special needs.

Lori devoted her career to special education, where she became widely known and deeply loved for her unwavering commitment to her students. She began her teaching career in Meredith, working at both the elementary and middle school levels from 1991 to 2007. She continued her work in Pembroke, Hopkinton, and Franklin, teaching across middle and high school settings. From 2014 to 2018, Lori served with the New Hampshire Department of Education as an Education Consultant, where she audited special education programs and led trainings across the state. She later served as Assistant Director at Regional Services Education Center (RSEC) from 2018 to 2022.

Throughout her career, Lori was known for always putting "her kids" first—especially those who needed the most support. She had a unique gift for connecting with students others struggled to reach, and she took particular pride in helping those often labeled as the "tough" or "bad" kids feel seen, valued, and capable.

Outside of her professional life, Lori embraced adventure and joy. She was an avid motorcyclist, traveler, and a second-degree black belt in karate. She had a deep love for sharks, which she affectionately called her "spirit animal." From coffee mugs and clothing to water bottles and yoga mats, sharks were a constant and joyful presence in her life. She was also a devoted Discovery Channel Shark Week enthusiast and was proud to have watched every season since its inception.

Beyond her love of sharks, Lori was a talented cook whose favorite holidays were those spent at home surrounded by family and friends. She found great joy in bringing people together, preparing meals, and making sure everyone around her was well fed and cared for. A commemorative cookbook of Lori's recipes and traditions is planned to honor this special part of her life.

One of her greatest joys in recent years was participating in shark research expeditions on Andros Island in the Bahamas with her husband, Alex. Her final trip in June 2025 was especially meaningful, highlighted by time spent snorkeling and watching baby sharks along Lemon Beach—an experience she cherished deeply.

In 2022, Lori was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. She faced this diagnosis with remarkable bravery, grace, and resilience, even as the disease gradually took more from her. Her strength and spirit throughout this time were an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

Lori is survived by her husband, Alexander A. Noordergraaf; her children, Alex and Brant; and her stepchildren, Vanya and Danil. She is also survived by her mother and stepfather, Mary and Phil Nickson, and her father, Albert Zych. She is further survived by her brother, Kevin of Manchester, New Hampshire, along with his wife and child. She was predeceased by her sister, Karen. Lori is also remembered by many extended family members, friends, colleagues, and the countless students whose lives she touched.

In accordance with Lori's wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held in the coming months, with details to be shared at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Lori requested that donations be made to Saving the Blue - Shark Research Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations can be made online at http://www.savingtheblue.org/lorinoordergraaf
