Louis Tyrrell

1950 - 2026

Lou Tyrrell, a beloved theatre actor, director, producer, and passionate advocate for the arts in Florida, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on April 10, 1026 surrounded by loved ones. He was 75.

Lou was widely respected for his deep commitment to new works in American theatre and his extraordinary ability to bring stories to life. Throughout his career, he played a vital role in supporting productions, nurturing new talent, and enriching the cultural landscape of Florida's theatre community.

Yet those who knew Lou best will remember not only his professional accomplishments, but the loving life he created beyond the stage. Lou had a remarkable gift for gathering people. A chef at a truly professional level, he opened his beautiful home weekly to a close and ever-growing circle of friends. Around his table, friendships deepened, laughter erupted, and everyone felt welcomed and cared for.

Lou was, in every sense, a golden retriever—he loved everyone and never met a stranger. His warmth, generosity, and genuine caring for others made people feel instantly at ease. Whether backstage or in his kitchen, he created spaces where people felt seen, valued, and connected.

He was more than a producer—he was a mentor, collaborator, host, and friend. His presence will be deeply missed by the many lives he touched, both in the theatre and around his table.

Lou is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathleen Holmes, his three brothers, Arthur Smadbeck of Martha's Vineyard, Paul Smadbeck of New York, and David Smadbeck of California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Smadbeck and Justine Tyrrell Smadbeck.

Lou became a first time pet dad when he met Kathleen. Over the next 46 years he opened his heart, home, and bed to an endless parade of four legged rescues, foundlings, and opportunists. He loved and served them tirelessly for all of their magical lives. He is survived by T, Vivian, Olivia, Clea Rose, Harry Pajamas, Ruby, and Maybelline.

Lou Tyrrell's theatre legacy lives on in every performance he brought to life and all the playwrights, actors, designers, and theatre professionals that he nurtured and loved. His golden retriever spirit will be present, tail wagging, at every meal, every gathering with the family members and friends he loved so completely and joyously.
