In Memoriam
Lud R Mayleas
July 9, 1943 - December 4, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lud Mayleas, a beloved father, uncle, grandfather, and cherished friend to many.
Lud was born in New York City, the son of Ludwig B. and Caroline (Berger) Mayleas. An avid reader, he began each day with The Wall Street Journal, a ritual that reflected his lifelong curiosity and engagement with the world. His deep love of history shaped both his extensive personal library and his passion for travel. Lud was a remarkable storyteller and an inexhaustible source of historical knowledge, retaining vivid details of the many places and eras that captured his imagination.
If a person is measured by the company they keep, his life stands as a powerful example. He was fiercely loyal to an ever-growing circle of friends, offering warmth, insight, and steadfast companionship. His devotion to his family and his boundless generosity of spirit touched countless lives across all the communities he was part of.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marlene Paul, and is survived by his daughter, Karin Mayleas Fischer (Tom); his grandsons, Nick and Ben Fischer; his sister, Margy Hatch (Randy); nieces Brooke Ueberroth and Paige Adair (Mike); cousins Kristin Ransier (Chuck) and Richard Smith; many grand nieces and nephews; and countless friends, both lifelong and newly made.
He will be dearly missed.
Memorial donations can be made to- Giulio Gari Foundation 175 W 72nd St #4f, New York, NY 10023 or Trinity Episcopal Church 89 Broadway, New York, NY 10006.
A celebration of life to be held at a later date.
