Marc passed away at home in Manteca, CA after a 4+ years long battle with cancer. He was surrounded many of his loving family and friends.
Marc was preceded in death by his parents Rudy and Bonnie (Tripe) Mestrovich. He is survived by his wife A. Cindy Hernandez, stepchildren Cody Abercrombie, Kyle Abercrombie, Kayce Ciolino and Carly Abercrombie. Also survived by sister Cynthia (Mestrovich) Mazzone, nephew Michael Mazzone and niece Natalie Mazzone.
Marc set a goal at just 5 years old to become a firefighter like his grandfather, and began that journey at age 19. After working as an EMT for Regional Ambulance, attending Daniel Freeman Paramedic School and working for Piedmont Fire Department, he was hired by the Berkeley Fire Department in 1990 where he remained for 27 years. He moved from firefighter/paramedic to firefighter/apparatus operator, and responded to countless incidents over the the years including the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989 and the Oakland Hills Firestorm of 1991.
Marc was extremely dedicated not only to his profession and agency, but to everyone with whom he worked and beyond. He was active in fund raising efforts, toy drives, and served as union president for many years.
After his retirement, Marc continued to be involved with the first responder community, inspiring his peers through PTSD and cancer awareness and education efforts, which continued after his diagnosis in 2021.
Marc's family was his priority, and he always made sure those he loved were cared for and has a piece of his heart. He was always smiling and ready to lend a shoulder and give a hug when needed.
When he wasn't working, you might be able to find Marc relaxing at his home near Yosemite, on an ATV trip to desert mountains, on a golf course, at an A's game, at a poker table, in Disneyland, at a Def Leppard concert or cooking with and for family and friends, no matter whose kitchen it was.
Marc's beautiful soul, beaming smile, goofy humor, generous spirit, gentle nature and unconditional love will be missed by so many.
Our comfort is our endless memories and knowing he is at eternal peace.
RIP, Buddy
We miss you!
