Margarita Subiros-Suarez, 82, of Bay Shore, NY, died peacefully at home on February 9, 2026, surrounded by family. Born March 16, 1943, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, she came to the United States in 1962.
While working at Pan American World Airways, she met her husband, Alfred Suarez. Together they became known to colleagues as a standout couple, even appearing on the cover of a Pan Am employee training textbook. Margarita also modeled for the airline in runway events.
She loved to travel and was known for spontaneous weekend trips simply to experience something new. She also loved dancing, a good drink, and a spirited debate, and in her younger years could happily spend long days in the sun at the beach. At home, she adored dogs and found real joy in gardening.
In September 2021, Margarita suffered a stroke that led to further health complications and was later diagnosed with dementia, and her family navigated the years that followed with deep love and care.
She is survived by her husband, Alfred Suarez; her children, Melissa Sutherland and Roberto Suarez; and her four grandchildren, Gabriella, Andrew, Olivia, and Matthew Sutherland.
In keeping with her wishes, no funeral or viewing will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
Alzheimer's Association.
