Maria Scotto Marlow, a former runway model and apparel designer, died on December 27 from complications of the flu. She was 89.

Born in Ronco Scrivia within the Province of Genoa, Italy, Maria later lived in Florence and Milan before moving to New York City as a young woman. She built a career in the fashion industry, first working as a runway model and later in the garment district on Seventh Avenue, where she created her own apparel line. She married William J. Marlow, an attorney at Loeb & Loeb, and soon afterward, the couple adopted their son, Jonathan.

A gifted and gracious host, Maria shared a vibrant life with her husband, welcoming friends and hosting countless dinner parties at their Bridgehampton home on weekends while spending their weekdays working in New York City. She later founded the women's sleepwear line Maria Scotto, producing sleepwear collections for local boutiques.

Maria is survived by her son, Jonathan; his wife, Kate; and her three grandchildren, Declan, Orla, and Ciara; as well as her brother, Bruno Scotto, and his wife, Loretta, of Fiesso d'Artico, Italy. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of more than forty years, William J. Marlow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children, 120 East 16th Street, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10003. A celebration of life will be planned in the coming weeks.
