It is with profound sadness that the family of Maribel “China” Lagares, age 65, of Waterbury, shares the news of her passing on Tuesday, December 09, 2025.
Maribel was born on December 24, 1959, in Utuado, Puerto Rico, the first born daughter of Ramonita Martinez. She was Waterbury’s very own Miss Puerto Rico of 1980. Her selflessness and love for people allowed her to explore different careers throughout her life. Her favorites among them being Direct Support Professional for disabled persons and helping families with housing as a Leasing Manager at Laurel Estates. Maribel’s life was filled with love, laughter, fashion, and music.
Maribel is survived by her daughter, Leedia Lagares and her mother Ramonita Martinez. She is also survived by her siblings Madelyn Rosa, Isabel Arroyo, and Jesus Arroyo. As well as her niece and nephews Jessica Villanueva, Luis Rosa, and Hector Villanueva Jr.
A viewing for Maribel will be held on Monday, December 22 from 10:00AM-12:00pm at St. Annes Church, 515 S Main Street, Waterbury, CT 06706. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at this time.
