Marie Therese Overtoom (née Barry), 97, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, in Baltimore, Maryland. Born on June 8, 1928, in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, she was the cherished daughter of Irish heritage who embraced life with boundless energy and creativity.

Marie's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with music, performance, faith, and family. Though christened Mary Barry at birth, her parents affectionately began calling her "Marie," a name that would accompany her through a remarkable journey spanning nearly a century. She was a devoted mother to six children: Diane M. Pippen, Barbara A. Peterson, Elaine M. Chapa, James G. Overtoom, Stephen G. Overtoom, and Daniel G. Overtoom. Her legacy extended to her twelve beloved grandchildren—Sara Pippen, Jillian Peterson, Kelsey Peterson, Brady Overtoom, Jamey Overtoom, Kayla Chapa, June Chapa, Rachel Bucklen, Jared Overtoom, Daniel Overtoom Jr., Brooks Overtoom—and five great grandchildren with two more on the way.

Marie was predeceased by her sister Ann Dillon; brothers Charles and Paul Barry; and her grandson Nickloas B. Pippen. She carried their memories in her heart throughout her life.

A devout Catholic and decades-long member of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Parkville, Maryland, Marie's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She attended mass weekly and contributed to the church community as both a cantor and organist for many years. Her love of music extended beyond the church; she sang and played piano throughout her life and found immense joy in sharing her talents with others.

Marie's passion for the arts was evident in every facet of her life. She performed as an actress, singer, and dancer in theater productions and was an active member of Senior Star Showcase at Essex Community College for many years. As part of the Oakettes singing group at the Seven Oaks Senior Center, she relished the opportunity to perform solos that allowed her to shine in the spotlight she so loved.

An avid reader with a deep appreciation for culture and creativity, Marie also enjoyed attending performances and supporting the arts. Her zest for life extended to physical activities as well; she loved tennis, swimming, walking for exercise, and even took tap dance lessons. The ocean held a special place in her heart—she spent countless summers at her condo in Ocean City, Maryland and later ventured to Sebring, Florida, to enjoy year-round sunshine before ultimately returning to Baltimore full-time.

Marie's love for animals brought many loyal canine companions into her life over the years. Her home was filled with warmth and laughter as she shared her days with family members and furry friends alike.

Proudly 100% Irish, Marie celebrated St. Patrick's Day with enthusiasm each year and often sang "Danny Boy," a song that resonated deeply with her spirit. In her final months, this cherished melody became a poignant reminder of her enduring love for life and family.

Marie lived independently and actively until the very end of her long and spirited life—a testament to her resilience and determination. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to inspire those who knew her.

As Emily Dickinson wrote: "Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality." May Marie's memory bring comfort to all who were touched by her remarkable presence.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church 9215 Old Harford Road in Parkville, MD 21234. All are welcome to attend the Memorial Mass.
