Mario Vittorio Rietti

Mario "Nono" Rietti, a distinguished economist, devoted family man, and community leader, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He was 88 years old.

Born on February 10, 1938, in La Ceiba, Honduras, Mario was the son of Dino and Antonia Rietti. From an early age, he displayed a keen intellect and a passion for learning that would shape his remarkable life. He attended San Francisco secondary school in Tegucigalpa before pursuing higher education at the Honduran National University, where he studied Economics. His academic journey continued with post-graduate studies at the Latin American Social and Economic Planning Institute (ILPES) in Chile and advanced training in Economic Planning Techniques and Project Preparation and Evaluation through the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America (CEPAL) in Mexico City. Mario further distinguished himself by earning a Master's degree in Economics and completing doctoral coursework in Economic Development at Stanford University in California, achieving top honors throughout his studies.

Mario's professional career was nothing short of extraordinary. He began as a professor of Economic Development at the University of Honduras, sharing his knowledge with future generations of economists. His expertise soon led him to the banking sector, where he served as First Vice-President and acting President of the Latin American Banking Federation (FELABAN). From 1975 to 1978, he represented Central America and Haiti as Executive Director at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C., contributing to numerous studies and projects aimed at fostering economic growth.

In 1978, Mario returned to Honduras and founded International Financial Consultants, a consulting firm that he successfully managed for four decades. Through this venture, he executed consulting assignments funded by prestigious organizations such as the World Bank, USAID, and the Inter-American Development Bank. His work left an indelible mark on economic development and financial planning across Latin America.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mario was deeply committed to his faith and his community. A devout Catholic, he actively participated in church-based organizations such as the Catholic Entrepreneurs Group (GEPROCA) in Honduras. He also founded Transparencia Honduras, an organization dedicated to combating corruption through principles rooted in the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church.

Mario found joy in both intellectual pursuits and physical activity. In his youth, he enjoyed boxing and basketball. Later in life, he cherished walking with his dogs and playing basketball with his grandchildren. An avid reader with an insatiable curiosity, he delved into topics ranging from economics and politics to world events, technology, and the stock market.

Above all else, Mario was a devoted family man who prioritized his loved ones. He is survived by Sandra, his beloved wife; their daughters Marisa, Alessandra, Paola, and Pia; sons-in-law Rafael, Miguel, Edgar, and Xavier; and nine cherished grandchildren: Christopher, Alessia, Ariana, Gigi, Miguel Adrian, Luis, Mario, Carlota, and Pipa. He is also survived by his brother Marco. Mario was predeceased by his parents Dino and Antonia Rietti and his brother Luis.

Mario approached life with remarkable courage, especially during the past fifteen years as he lived with Parkinson's Disease. Throughout his illness, he demonstrated both grace and strength, inspiring those around him with his steadfast spirit. His unwavering faith in God served as a guiding light, helping him navigate the challenges and uncertainties of his condition. Mario's resilience and faith were evident to all who knew him, making his journey a testament to hope and perseverance.

Mario's legacy is one of intelligence, strength, discipline, and unwavering dedication—to his family, his community, and his profession. His contributions to economics and development planning have left a lasting impact on Honduras and beyond. Those who knew him will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend.

May Mario "Nono" Rietti's memory serve as a source of comfort and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. A Funeral was held on March 8, 2026 at Funeraria La Auxiliadora Blvd. Suyapa. He was laid to rest beside his father and mother at Jardines de Paz Suyapa.
