Marjorie Jean Young Ivey

Born August 23, 1930, in Birmingham, Alabama, to George and Mary Young.

Died January 25, 2026.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Bryant Ivey; a son, James Bryant Ivey; her brothers George Howard Young (Kay) and Jimmy Young (Joyce); and a granddaughter, Anna Hanger.

She is survived by three children, Bil Ivey (Cathy), Jan Ivey, and Lisa Hanger (Larry); two grandchildren, David Ivey (Jessica) and Mary Ivey Edgar (Dustin); four great-grandchildren, Abigail and Hannah Edgar, Rose and Ty Ivey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean grew up in Bibb County, was baptized at Centreville First Presbyterian Church, and graduated from the University of Alabama (1951). Her childhood was filled with family, church, music, horseback riding, and community.

She met Bryant at the University of Alabama, and they were married in 1952. She lived in Centreville with her parents and her baby while Bryant served in Korea; in 1953, he came back to work for the Southern Bell Telephone Company.

Over the years, they lived in Cullman, Mobile, and Birmingham—but Birmingham was their true "home." Along the journey, she served in practically every capacity in the Presbyterian Church--from Sunday School teacher to circle president to deacon to elder. Blessed with a beautiful soprano voice, she participated in the church choir for most of her life, often being a soloist.

Jean bloomed where she was planted. From her hometown to college to the various places she lived, she developed lifelong friendships. Throughout her life, she engaged in countless acts of kindness--most of which will never be recorded except in the hearts of the recipients. She also had a natural ability to connect with, encourage, and mentor young people.

A lifelong learner who was a voracious reader, she loved the Alabama Symphony, took voice lessons for most of her life, and traveled extensively. When all her children were enrolled in school, Jean began taking courses to earn a teacher certification in addition to her English degree. In 1967, she began a long teaching career, first at Huffman and Ramsay High Schools, and finally at Jefferson State Community College. She also received her Master's degree in English from UAB.

Jean was a natural servant leader. At various times, she served as president of the Eastern Women's Committee of 50, president of the Allegro Music Club, and president of the local Delta Kappa Gamma chapter.

Jean will be greatly missed, but she's now united with God and reunited with her heavenly family.
