Marjorie Crannell Younglof (“Mardie”), of Gainesville, VA, aged 82, passed away on December 13, 2025, the daughter of Richard Walter Crannell and his wife, Marjorie Laub Crannell.

Mardie was born in Easton, PA on October 11, 1943. Profoundly hard-of-hearing at birth, she was the initial pupil of renowned audiologist Helen Beebe’s pioneering “auditory-verbal” method of teaching children with severe hearing loss to speak and listen to the best of their abilities.

Mardie’s childhood was spent immersed in books. Her thirst for reading was such that she quickly exhausted the supply of children’s books at the local library and subsequently had to receive special authorization from her mother to delve into the “grown-up” section.

She graduated from Moravian Preparatory School in 1961 and then attended Elmira College briefly before transferring to Syracuse University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1965. While at Syracuse, Mardie met her future husband, Robert Younglof, of Arlington, MA.

After the family moved to the Northern Virginia area in the mid-1970’s, Mardie’s professional career path initially took her to the healthcare field where she worked as a medical technologist for a number of years at a hospital in Woodbridge, VA. Her fundamental literary callings wouldn’t be denied, however, and so she eventually shifted gears to do editing work for a book publishing company in Manassas, VA.

Throughout her adult life, Mardie was actively engaged with advocacy for the local deaf and hard-of-hearing community in the area, including involvement with the Northern Virginia Resource Center (NVRC), where she served a term as chairperson on the board of directors. Mardie represented these interests as an Olympic torch relay runner in Charlottesville, VA in connection with the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Mardie had an immense interest in all matters relating to genealogy, with long hours spent researching family lineage and greatly enjoyed helping others solve puzzles and gaps in their own family trees. She enjoyed being outdoors and taking long walks, the brisk pace of which proving challenging at times for her adult son.

Mardie is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert, son Erik Younglof of Austin, TX, and brother Richard W. Crannell, Jr. (Ann) of Dover Plains, NY. Her loss is felt profoundly by her family and the many friends who loved her. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, and as a caring, generous friend who was always ready to help others. Private services will follow at a later date. The family requests that you remember Mardie by supporting a charity of your choice.
