Mark David Reiss passed away peacefully in his San Francisco apartment while taking part in one of his favorite pastimes, watching a Golden State Warriors game. He lived a full life as a physician, accomplished pianist, loving husband, father and grandfather.
He was born in New York City to Manny and Lee Reiss and lived in Queens along with his younger sister Florence. He studied piano and thought about a musical career but ultimately chose medicine, becoming part of the first graduating class of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. While there he met his wife Joan Reinhardt Reiss, of blessed memory, and they eventually moved to Sacramento with their two children Craig and Justine where he joined Radiological Associates, a thriving medical practice.
A doctor by day and musician by night, he performed often at the Crocker Art Gallery and the CSUS Concert Hall. His wife Joan became a nationally ranked marathon runner and competitive cyclist, but Mark kept pace running over a dozen marathons himself and joining her for century rides and the California AIDS Ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
Mark loved his family dearly and led them on trips to Hawaii, Mexico, Denmark, France, Holland and elsewhere. He retired at 55 and traveled the world with his wife Joan visiting over 60 countries around the globe. They moved to San Francisco in 1990 and became active in their synagogue Congregation Beth Sholom. As a grandfather or "Zada" he loved playing with his grandkids, often taking them for summer vacations at "Camp Reiss" in places like Santa Barbara and Yosemite.
He loved the arts and frequently went to opera, ballet, symphony and theater performances in the Bay Area. He enjoyed meeting new people and discovering their interests and passions. He loved trying new experiences and wasn't afraid to make mistakes along the way. We lost him far too soon, but we know he is back on a bike ride somewhere with his beloved Joan. May his memory be a blessing.
