Martha Alice Savoy, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, friend, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully at her home in Washington, D.C., on March 3, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on July 7, 1931, in Washington, D.C. to Lawrence and Margaret Quarles, Martha was the sixth of eight children and grew up with strong values rooted in family, faith, and perseverance.

Martha spent her early years in Rockville, Maryland, where she was raised by her grandparents, Reverend Henry and Florence Quarles. She graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1950. Determined to pursue a path beyond domestic work, Martha followed her heart and enrolled in cosmetology school earning her license in 1952. Her skill, creativity, and dedication allowed her to touch many lives, helping others feel confident, radiant, and cared for.

On September 15, 1955, Martha married the love of her life, William Lawrence Savoy. Together, they built a life centered on love, commitment, and family. Their union was blessed with three children: James Savoy (LaRue), Paulette Savoy, and Leonard Willis (Arlette). The Savoy home became a hub of warmth and hospitality for family and friends alike. Known for their "open-home policy," Martha and William welcomed relatives and friends into their home whenever they needed a place to stay—whether for a short visit or long-term support. Their home was also the site of countless gatherings and celebrations, particularly lively barbeques that created cherished memories for all who attended.

Martha's talents extended far beyond her career in beauty. She was an exceptional seamstress and a legendary baker whose cakes were renowned for their artistry and flavor. Her creations were anything but ordinary—each cake was a masterpiece that delighted all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Her skill earned her numerous requests for cakes over the years, making baking almost a second profession. As those close to her would say, "Betty Crocker didn't have anything on Martha Savoy!"

A woman of deep faith, Martha was a proud and devoted member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church for over 60 years. She served in various capacities within the church community, including Treasurer for Usher Board #2, and Advisor for the Youth Usher Board for many years, embodying her commitment to service and spirituality.

Martha was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 45 years, William Savoy and her daughter, Paulette Savoy Greenwell. She is survived by her loving children, James Savoy (LaRue) and Leonard Willis (Arlette); her brother Russell Wilson; her beloved grandchildren, Dana, Jeri, Jacelyn, Nicole, Brandyce, Lenny, Justin and Jacob; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who were touched by her kindness.

Martha's warm spirit, great sense of humor and unwavering dedication to others left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel cared for and valued. Her legacy of love will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, extended family members, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Her Celebration of Life service will be held on April 11, 2026 at 11:00 AM at
