Mary Elizabeth Bayer

1943 - 2026

Mary Elizabeth Bayer, 83, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Mary was born on March 4, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, where she grew up and attended Whitehaven High School. She later devoted her life to being a homemaker, creating a home marked by warmth, humor, and unmistakable personality. Mary was married to her beloved husband, A.C. Bayer, for 56 years, a partnership rooted in loyalty, strength, and shared life experiences.
She had a lifelong love of animals—especially her dogs and horses—and gave generously of her time to causes close to her heart. Mary volunteered with Pony Club and helped organize the Ha Penny Horse Trials, work she was proud of and deeply committed to, alongside fellow horse enthusiasts. Her involvement reflected both her passion for horses and her willingness to jump in and get things done.
She was opinionated and spunky, never one to mince words, but she was also warm and genuine. You always knew where you stood with Mary: if she loved you, you knew it, and it came without pretense. She was real, loyal, and fiercely herself.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband A.C. Bayer, and her brother, James Shepherd.
She leaves behind her daughter, Beth Bayer of Ocala, Florida; her brothers John Shepherd and Clarence Shepherd; her sister Margaret Wright;her sister in law Sylvia Shepherd and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mary's life was held with friends and family, honoring her spirited nature, her love of animals, and the many memories she leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's honor may be made to the Humane Society of Ocala.
