On Tuesday, January 27, 2015 a Celebration of Life memorial service, held for Mary in the Cannon Chapel Sanctuary at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, included the following obituary:

Mary Kathleen Cawthon was born in Montgomery, Alabama, the youngest of four children of William and Kathleen Cawthon and sister to Richard, David, and Robert. Mary graduated with a bachelor's degree in English from Emory College in 1979 and began working in the Emory University Undergraduate Admission Office in the Administration Building in August, 1980. She also received a masters degree in Library Science from Clark University. As the admission office grew and transitioned to the Boisfeuillet Jones Building and later the Oxford Road Building, Mary became an integral part of the team. She was the longest tenured staff member and a treasured colleague to all who worked with her. Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed creating needlework for family and friends. She loved traveling, and her favorite pastime was visiting Disney World with her dear friend, Ernelle Fife, and her beloved brother, Robert. To all who knew her, Mary was best known for her sweet disposition and warm smile. She leaves a void in our lives that cannot be filled, but as one former colleague remarked, "Now we know an angel".
