San Diego, California

Mary O’Donnell Clement was born in St. Louis, MO, to Mary Ellen Hennessy and Patrick O'Donnell. In 1945, the family moved to California and settled in Benicia, CA. Mary attended Saint Vincent's High School in Vallejo and attended Dominican College in San Rafael. She entered the convent to become a Dominican Sister of San Rafael. As someone with a deep sense of service, faith and resilience, she worked in the order for nearly twenty years. She left the religious order to start another wonderful journey in her life. She looked for a city with the best weather year round, and San Diego was the perfect spot. There, she taught high school English at Our Lady of Peace in San Diego. She loved literature and poetry, and she could be called on to share many valuable insights, including the meaning of her favorite Shakespeare plays. She also met and married Ray Clement in 1980. Their 33 years together were filled with sunsets on their deck in Point Loma, visits to the zoo, theater, opera, symphony, which Mary loved, and time sailing, which Ray loved. Ray predeceased his wife in 2013. Mary’s next adventure began at Fredericka Manor where she met many new friends and found much to enjoy and do in her retirement, including line dancing and yoga. There she met Gary Prickett, a treasured companion and friend. He predeceased Mary in 2024. Mary was a reader, a story teller, a lover of adventure, a wonderful friend, and a devoted aunt, who made a lasting and enduring mark on her family and she will be missed beyond measure. Mary’s guiding principle in life was service to others and she gave her time, talent and treasure to many worthy causes. She was predeceased by her parents, and her brother, Thomas. She is survived by her nieces, Mary Levy (Stuart), Kathleen Gaylord (Dave), Loretta O’Donnell (Peter) and nephew, James O’Donnell. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews. A breakfast reception honoring Mary will be held at Fredericka Manor in Chula Vista, Saturday, April 11th at 10 am. A memorial mass will be held Monday, April 13th at St Rose of Lima Church in Chula Vista at Noon. All are welcome. Donations can be made in Mary’s name to Sisters of the Saint Dominic, Congregation of the Most Holy Name and mailed to the Advancement Office, 1520 Grand Avenue, San Rafael, CA 94901
