Ms. Mary Helen “Carolyn” Davis, born Mary Helen Vorhis on December 14, 1941, in Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, in her hometown of Indianapolis. She was 84 years old.
Born to the late James Vorhis Sr. and Willa May Vorhis, Mary was a woman whose heart, spirit, and smile could light up any room. From her earliest days, she was surrounded by love, faith, and family—values that became the foundation of her life and legacy.
A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Mary was a devoted member of Light of the World Christian Church. Her faith was central to her life, and she served faithfully on the Usher Board and with the Food Pantry for many years. Her presence at church was marked by grace and dedication; she welcomed all with warmth and sincerity.
Mary lived her life with generosity and unwavering love. She was the heartbeat of her family—a source of strength, comfort, and joy. Her home was more than just a place to gather; it was a sanctuary filled with good food, laughter, music, and memories that will be cherished for generations.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever carry her memory in their hearts: her beloved daughters Jeneane Thompson and Tonya Robinson; cherished grandchildren Kyeshia Wickware, Ryan Robinson, Jamar Thompson, Corey Wickware, and Janelle Scott (Lawrence); and treasured great-grandchildren Christian Riddle, Xavier Twyman, Kentrelle Robinson, Rhyan Robinson, Immanuel Thompson, Ameelah Scott, Amirah Scott, Alanna Scott, Camrie Wickware, and Calie Wickware.
Mary was preceded in death by her daughter Deborah Vorhis; her sister Marie Stringfellow; her brothers Theodore Vorhis and James Vorhis Jr.; and her parents James Vorhis Sr. and Willa May Vorhis.
Her role as a mother extended far beyond biology—she nurtured not only her children but also grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members with wisdom that guided them through life’s challenges. Her kindness left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Though we grieve the loss of such a remarkable woman, we also celebrate the beautiful life she lived—the laughter she shared so freely, the warmth she gave so generously, and the joy she brought into every heart she touched.
“Her children rise up and call her blessed, and her family praises her.” – Proverbs 31:28
