Mary Hendrien, 82, passed away on January 19, 2026 at Brookdale Memory Care in Troy Michigan. She suffered from Vascular Dementia for several years as it slowly progressed. Born and raised in Detroit's Ardmore Subdivision (near Rosedale Park), she graduated from Redford High School in 1961. She then attended Michigan State University and graduated in 1965 with a Teaching degree. She then had a long career in the Livonia School system teaching at Bryant Junior High School, Stevenson High School and Franklin High School. She taught French and would later take a sabbatical to get her Master's in counseling. With that she would finish out her career as a high school guidance counselor. She also enjoyed being part of the Mary Kay Cosmetics brand for a number of years as a Beauty Consultant. After a much-deserved retirement in 2000, Mary would then work at a couple of part time jobs to keep busy and finally found her niche at Sue's Hallmark store in Southfield, where she spent 10 years. It was a perfect fit for someone who was very sociable and also liked helping people. Throughout her life and careers she made many friends, some life-long in her journey. Mary's talents and hobbies were endless, and included sewing, knitting, basket-making, golf, reading, gardening, cooking and so many others. Her personal life included marrying Harvey Winn in 1967 and they had a beautiful daughter (Amy) on Mary's own birthday in 1973. Some years later they would mutually part ways and divorce. In late 1978 she had to have the engine in her 1964 Corvette rebuilt and the car would be the matchmaker for her next husband. It was the beginning of a friendship that blossomed into romance. At the time neither was considering such a scenario, but it happened. They would then wed in 1982 at a Justice of the Peace in Troy Michigan, and the rest, as they say, is history. Mary is survived by her husband Horst, daughter Amy Harris (Michael), grandsons Ian and Colin, nephew Eric Hatch (Annie Lauria and two daughters and one son), niece Tracy Hatch (Terry Burns and a daughter) and sister in-law Trudy Hatch.
She was proceeded in death by her brother James Hatch in 2025

The family would also like to thank Brookdale Memory Care in Troy and Assured Hospice Care of Southfield for the wonderful comfort and care she received during this part of life's journey.

A celebration of Life is planned for a later date.
Private internment will be at Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti.
