Mary Maita
February 1, 1957 – January 26, 2026
Mary Maita passed peacefully on January 26, 2026, just days before her 69th birthday. She was a woman of quiet beauty, deep feeling, and a gentle presence that will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary was a devoted and loving mother to her children, Dawn and son in law Luke, Andrea, and Ross, and a cherished grandmother to Stephen and his wife Angelique, Becca, and Zoe, who brought her immense joy and pride. She also leaves behind great granddaughter, Ezra. She was a beloved sister to Barbara, Chris, Janet, and Toni, and a treasured aunt and cousin to many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She also leaves behind her beloved brother from another mother, Dan Fernandez, along with many very dear friends who were chosen family and meant the world to her.
She was preceded in death by her father Anthony Maita, her mother Myrtle Maita, and her brother Jim Maita, all of whom she now joins in peace.
Mary was known for her striking beauty—her clear blue eyes and olive skin reflecting her father’s heritage—but even more memorable was the warmth and sensitivity she carried within. She had a beautiful singing voice and a deep love of music, especially the soundtracks of the 1970s that spoke to her soul. Artists like Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, America, and Bread were lifelong companions, weaving comfort, reflection, and meaning through her life.
She graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1975 and married Steven Kuenne in 1979. Though they eventually went their separate ways, they shared many years together and remained friends, a testament to mutual respect and enduring care.
Mary lived with sensitivity, grace, and a quiet depth. She loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. Her presence will be felt in memories, music, and moments of stillness where her spirit gently lingers.
May all who read this pause to wish Mary—our beloved Mary—the happiest and most joyful spirit life imaginable. May she be surrounded by love, music, and light, now and always.
