Mary Frances Mattar (née Crehan) entered eternal rest on January 7, 2026, passing peacefully while surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 10, 1932, to Owen Thomas Crehan and Margarite Josephine Crehan (Dunn). She was welcomed into heaven by her parents and her beloved brothers, Thomas and Gerald Crehan, who preceded her in death.
Mary is survived by her brothers, Joseph (Sheila) Crehan and Fr. Matthias Crehan, OFM; and by her devoted children, Sharon Clemence (Keith), Tony Mattar, Stephen Mattar (Nancy), and Cathryn Ewers (Steven).
She was a loving grandmother to Kristen, Megan, Nick, Tony, Caitlin, Caroline, Dan, John, Hannah, David, Lydia, and Joey; a great-grandmother to Audrey, Julia, Ethan, Mason, Evelyn, Noah, and Riley.
Mary attended St. Mary’s of Redford Elementary School, Immaculata High School, and Marygrove College. A devoted homemaker with a generous spirit, she embraced life with curiosity and joy. She loved to travel and adored the theater, and she starred in many theatrical productions during her high school and college years. She had a natural flair for entertaining and cultivated many cherished friendships throughout her life, and was very proud of her Irish heritage.
Her faith was the quiet compass of her life. Mary was deeply involved in her churches, graciously volunteering her time and talents. A gifted writer, she generously donated her skills to writing newsletters for Right to Life and the Alzheimer’s Association, always writing with purpose, compassion, and grace.
Mary also enjoyed a fulfilling professional career in Human Resources, beginning at Detroit Receiving Hospital and later at the Lionel Train Company, where her kindness, integrity, and professionalism were deeply valued.
In her later years, Mary resided at Mendelson Assisted Living at Lourdes in Waterford, where she received exceptional care, companionship, and kindness.
Above all else, Mary adored her family. Her life was one of faith, creativity, generosity, and love—a life beautifully lived and a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.
