Mary E. "Mae" (King) McCarthy, age 87, a longtime resident of Braintree, died peacefully, Thursday, March 12, 2026 in the comfort of her daughter's home, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born in Boston, to the late Josephine (Johnson) and Michael King. Raised and educated in Mission Hill, she was a graduate of Mission Church High School, Class of 1957.
Mae lived in Braintree for most of her life but had also lived in Quincy.
Mae worked as an office manager for The Grossman Companies and as a contract administrator for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. She had been retired for many years.
She enjoyed boating, fishing, crocheting, and was a talented cook.
Devoted mother of Paul M. McCarthy III of Cumberland, R.I., Robert E. McCarthy and his wife Becky of Derry, N.H., Kristen M. Sullivan and her husband Ben of Braintree, and Lauren A. O'Sullivan of West Roxbury.
Loving grandmother of Leah, Sean, and Cara; Cassie and Matty; Mary, Claire, and Ben, Jr.; Bridget and Dan.
Cherished great grandmother of Gavin, Brenna, and Finn.
Dear sister of Dorothy MacLeod of N.H., Barbara McCarthy of Hanover, Michael King of Hull, and predeceased by James King, Claire Fabrizio, and Kathleen Cobb.
Mae is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Memorial Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Friday, March 20, from 4 - 7 p.m. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Saturday, March 21, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
