Charles Matthew (Matt) Scruby died peacefully at his home in Chicago, IL, on Sunday, June 29, 2025, aged 69.
Matt was born May 3, 1956, in Vincennes, IN, son of Charles Calvin and Shirley (Anderson) Scruby. He grew up in Carmi, IL, where he enjoyed basketball, diving, and drumming. After graduating from Carmi-White County High School in 1974, various adventures took him west to settle in the San Francisco area.
Earning a degree in electrical engineering from Heald College in San Francisco in 1989, he worked as a greenhouse engineer, installing and maintaining computerized climate systems for nurseries and florists along California's central coast.
From the earliest days of the internet, Matt embraced social media, making countless online friends and not a few sparring partners. Enthusiast and contrarian, he loved Zappa, Dada, collage, all kinds of cinema, and conversations with his neighbors. He read widely and specialized in the well-crafted rejoinder. Even after relocating to Chicago, he remained a Californian at heart.
Surviving are his wife Kate Davey, son Samuel Scruby, daughter Rachel Scruby, siblings Megan Price (Chuck) of Rochester Hills, MI, David "Skip" Scruby (Janet) of Lebanon, OH, and Priscilla Abell (Rick) of Metropolis, IL, and eight nephews and nieces. The family gathered to celebrate his life in July.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Susan Scruby.
