Matthew Vaughn Burdick passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

If you were lucky enough to pass through Matt’s orbit in this life, you already know — the world lost a one-of-one, 180-gram-edition human.

Matt was born on May 23, 1979, in Milpitas, California, to Harry Burdick and Carolyn McCulloch, the fourth of six siblings in a family that produced its fair share of personality. From the start, he showed signs of who he’d become: curious, capable, a little stubborn, and always interested in how things worked — and how they could work better.

In the late 1990s, he made his way to Salt Lake City by way of Cortez, Colorado. This is where he built his life and where he became, fully and beautifully, Matt.

Matt married Terri Mehlhoff (née Buchanan) in 2001, and together they raised two children, Tanner and Riley Scout, who were at the center of his world. In recent years, he shared a deeply meaningful partnership with Brianne Cunningham and invested fully in the lives of her children, Ruby and Camden, with the same presence he brought to everything that mattered.

Matt spent many of his working years in the brewing world. He built an award-winning career as a skilled and respected member of the guild. The work suited him. He loved taking recipes of all kinds and turning them into something meant to be shared and enjoyed.

Matt’s spectrum of expertise was impressive. Apart from being a bona fide audiophile and record collector with an encyclopedic knowledge of music, he also had a deep well of know-how — he was a true fix-it guy whose range ran from the deeply practical to the beautifully obscure. At the center of it all were the funky, unique rigs with which he would tinker — from rafts to automobiles.

A quick “yes” to any desert or river adventure, the call to rally often found Matt materializing in his trademark hospital scrubs and the perfect soundtrack — ready to roll. The legend of his custom-lifted Astro van run on Elephant Hill Trail in Canyonlands National Park is just one tale that will live on for ages in loose stories told around flickering campfires.

Personality-wise, Matt was the world’s softest steel wool — equal parts gruff and sensitive, with the best of both always close to the surface. Friends would confirm: if you ever needed help, his trademark smirk and laugh were always just a text away. After his quick read of the situation, you knew the deal…

You were in good hands.

He is survived by his children, Tanner and Riley Scout; his partner, Brianne Cunningham and her children, Ruby and Camden; his parents, Harry Burdick and Carolyn McCulloch; and his siblings, Wayne (Lorena), David (Sarah), Sharon (Jeff), Stephanie, and Anna (Geoff), along with a wide and loyal network of friends who will feel his absence in ways that are deep, real, and shared forever.

A celebration of Matt’s life will be held on Saturday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m. at The Organ Loft, 3331 South Edison Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, find a record, put it on a turntable, and turn it up.
