Matthew Cowell

Matt Cowell was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania on November 2,1943 to Matt and Ellen Cowell. His youth was filled with playing sports, hunting, fishing and time with his large extended family. Matt was an only child, but it did not seem like it. He had over 50 first cousins, many of whom were as close as brothers and sisters.
Matt later attended WVU where he met his wife of 60 years. Together Matt and Phyllis built a marriage grounded in faith and family, raising their daughters Karen and Beth.
Matt's first career was a Pennsylvania State Police Officer and then Detective. He experienced a lifetime worth of adventures during those years. After retiring, the family relocated to California, eventually settling in Escondido in 1988. Matt pursued a second career in security, highlighted by working as the Director of Security for Jack Murphy Stadium and the SD Sports Arena.
Matt loved life, especially attending Padre games, swimming in his pool and sitting in his backyard with his dog. His greatest joy was being with his grandchildren Michael, Megan, Justin and Meredith. He spent countless hours playing with them in the pool, attending their activities and making them laugh.
Matt and Phyllis cherished their church. They faithfully attended Sunday services and many activities. They served by teaching Sunday school and hosting exchange students. Matt LOVED being Santa for the preschool.
His legacy will live on through his family and all that were blessed to know him.
