Matthew Soule Hyland, Sr.
October 7, 1963 - March 30, 2025
Matthew Soule Hyland, Sr. (Matt) passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky, surrounded by his family. In 2024, his health declined after being diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy, a rare neurodegenerative disorder, which he faced with courage and grace.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 7, 1963, to Patricia and Robert F. Hyland, Jr., Matt graduated from St. Louis Priory School in 1981. An athlete at heart, he swam and played football in high school and also worked as a ball boy for the St. Louis Cardinals NFL team. After graduation, he combined his love of sports with a career in broadcast sales, much of it devoted to professional sports organizations and broadcasters.
In his thirties, Matt chose sobriety and remained steadfast in that commitment for the rest of his life—a lasting testament to his strong will and perseverance.
Matt is survived by his children, Matthew Hyland, Jr. (Catherine) of White Salmon, WA; Andrew Hyland of St. Louis, MO; George Hyland of Portland, OR; Lauren Hyland of San Francisco, CA; and Caroline Hyland of St. Louis, MO; as well as his granddaughters, Tegan, Stevie, Charli, and Wynona Hyland. He is also survived by his sister, Molly Hyland Ittner (Curt) of St. Louis, and his brother, Robert F. Hyland III (Anne), and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patricia and Robert F. Hyland, Jr.; his brother, W. Claiborne Hyland; and his nephew, Wesley Hyland.
A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 10, 2025, at St. Anselm's Church (Priory) in St. Louis.
