Michael Joseph Harkin, age 77, of Arlington, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on February 22, 2026, in the presence of his sister and a close friend.
Born on April 13, 1948, in Antrim, Northern Ireland, to James and Elizabeth (McGleenon) Harkin, Michael was the younger of two children. After completing his education, he moved to London, where he established a successful career as a travel agent and resided for fifteen years. In the 1980s, he relocated to Washington, D.C., where he continued his career with American Express and made his home for the remainder of his life.
Michael’s love of travel was matched only by his ability to do so in style. He enjoyed reading and valued the camaraderie he shared with friends during weekly mahjong and domino games. A devoted great-uncle, he took great pleasure in spending time with his nieces and nephews and their families, whether at family gatherings or cheering on the children at their sporting events.
Michael is survived by his sister, Frances (Harkin) Mirczak of Reno, Nevada; his nieces and nephews, Paul Meyer, Loraine Harkin (Ross Stannard), Roman Mirczak (Helena), and Meghan Morris (Dan); as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his niece, Deborah Meyer.
Michael will be remembered for his gentle nature, sharp intellect, and quick wit. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the good fortune to know him. There are no funeral arrangements. Michael’s ashes will be returned to Antrim, Northern Ireland in accordance with his wishes.
