Melissa Maria Habig Burden, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home in Vancouver, the evening of March 22nd, 2026, surrounded by her children. She was 54 years old. Born on August 12, 1971, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon, she was the daughter of Chance and Melissa Habig.
Raised in the Portland - Vancouver area, Melissa spent most of her life in Clark County, Washington. She graduated from Evergreen High School in 1989 and for many years made her home in Washougal. After high school, she worked as a babysitter and in retail, but her greatest work—and deepest joy—was being a devoted mother to her children, Amanda and Ryan.
Melissa had an enduring love of music, a passion she shared wholeheartedly with her kids. Thanks to her, both carry a great appreciation for the sounds of the 1980s—something Melissa took great pride in. Throughout her life, she attended countless concerts and loved a wide range of musical genres. Among her favorite artists were Evanescence, The Cure, and George Michael.
One of the most meaningful achievements of Melissa's life was her recovery from alcohol addiction. She was deeply proud to have reached five years of sobriety shortly before her passing. During her time at the Oxford House in Sifton, she formed strong bonds and cared profoundly for several of her recovery companions.
Melissa was preceded in death by her ex-husband, David Burden, with whom she remained close until his passing in January 2025. She is survived by her children, Amanda and Ryan Burden; her grandchildren Mahlik and Nayjah; her brothers, Andy and Joe Habig; extended family; and several dear friends.
A very special thanks to her daughter, Amanda, for tirelessly and vigilantly caring for her mom over the final days of her life.
A private celebration of life will be held for family and friends. The date and location will be announced at a later date.
