With deep love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Melvin Douglas Miller, who died on March 8, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born in Springfield, Vermont, on September 15, 1943, Melvin enhanced the lives of those who loved him with his humor, practical helpfulness, and tender faithfulness. From childhood, he sneaked in mild pranks and corny jokes to the delight of all who knew him.

After his military service, where he learned radar technology and electronics, he chose to settle in the warmth of the Birmingham area in Alabama, where he found both a job as a Xerox copier repair technician and his wife, Mary Jack Williams. They raised three daughters in their 60-year marriage. His steadfast loving devotion to Mary was admired by many. In his final years, with humble expectations and deep emotion, he often spoke of his pride that all three of his daughters were responsible and had successful lives. He said not all can say that.

As the children matured, while living in Georgia, Melvin turned to finding spiritual guidance by studying the Bible and becoming a baptized Jehovah’s Witness. This elevated his marital union to a spiritual bond. Then they chose full-time service in a Bible education ministry and moved to serve nearby congregations that benefitted from their service, leadership, and example.

By retiring early and living simply for many years, Melvin and Mary fulfilled their shared desire to travel to many countries for vacations and to attend Jehovah’s Witness conventions, contributing to the spirit of an international brotherhood. They visited Hawaii (multiple times), South Korea, New Zealand, Japan, Ukraine, Australia, Estonia, and Poland.

Even in the final weeks of his struggle with Alzheimer’s, Melvin found something to laugh at and kept his faith strong that he would be resurrected to the Biblically-promised paradise on earth.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Mary Williams Miller; his three daughters: Tina Tidmore (Holland) of Ashville, Ala., Misty Sciarabba (Steven) of Trussville, Ala., and Cindy Lee (Jeff) of Clay, Ala.; his only grandchild, Jeffrey Douglas Lee of Clay, Ala.; nephews, David Miller (Betty) of Vermont and Robert Miller (Christina) of New York; niece, Vickie Nee of Georgia; and sisters-in-law, Anne Miller of Vermont and Angie Miller of New York.

He is predeceased by his parents, Ernest Judson Miller and Susan Clara Abbott; his brothers, William (Bill) J. Miller and Donald E. Miller; and his niece, Theresa Nicita.

All who knew him are invited to attend and honor Melvin’s life at the memorial service. A reception will follow. Interment is yet to be determined.
