Michael John Barrett, of New City, New York, passed away on December 19, 2025, at the age of 79. Born to the late Marguerite (nee Hall) and George Barrett on May 15, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, he lived a life defined by loyalty and devotion to his family.

On December 19, 1970, Mike married the love of his life, Patricia McCabe. Their fifty-five-year union was blessed with three daughters: Patricia (William), Michele (Robert), and Kathleen (Timothy). He was a loving grandfather to Caitlin, Christian, Kensley, and Kaiden, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his brothers G. Kevin, Daniel, and Robert.

Mike pursued higher education at Seton Hall University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 and a Master of Arts degree in 1973. He was an active member of the Seton Hall University Track and Field Team from 1963 through 1967. During his tenure, he earned an athletic scholarship, reflecting his dedication and athletic prowess. Specializing in the sprints, Mike competed in the 100 yards, 220 yards, and the quarter mile events. His speed and skill also contributed to several Seton Hall University championship one mile relay teams, showcasing his versatility and commitment to the team’s success.

Sworn into the New York City Police Department on his 21st birthday, May 15, 1967, Mike attended and graduated from the Academy before being assigned to the elite, Tactical Patrol Force (TPF)—a unit of which whose like will never be seen again. Between two stints at TPF, he was assigned to the prestigious Intelligence Division, where he worked on the Mayor’s Detail under Edward I. Koch. In his later years on the NYPD, although officially assigned to the 43rd Precinct, he was temporarily assigned to the Summer Detail at Orchard Beach in the 45th Precinct. Mike retired as a Lieutenant of Police on February 28, 1995.

Mike enjoyed cruising with his loved ones in The Haven and proudly achieved the coveted Ambassador Tier level with Norwegian Cruise Line. He also enjoyed his many years of service as Treasurer on the West Nyack Swim Club Board of Directors.

Mike was a great man — a rock, a legend, and above all, a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. His strength and presence shaped the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in the life he shared and the countless memories he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
