Michael Ganey, 78, passed away on December 27, 2025, in Charleston, South Carolina. Born on June 18, 1947, in Carbon Hill, Alabama, he lived a life defined by craftsmanship, service, and dedication to those around him.
From 1966 to 1970, Michael served in the United States Air Force, specializing in communications and navigation systems for aircraft and overseeing maintenance scheduling. His technical expertise and steadfast reliability were hallmarks of both his military service and professional life.
As a Master Carpenter in Dayton, Ohio, he devoted many years to restoring historic homes, churches, and businesses throughout the city and in the Oregon Historic District. Much of his work still stands today.
Michael was larger than life, had a laugh you could hear around the block, was a master storyteller, could build or fix absolutely anything and do it perfectly and practically exploded with pride and love for his family. His children knew him simply as "The Best Dad Ever," a title earned through years of love, guidance, laughter, and unwavering support.
He is survived by his beloved wife and soulmate of 57 years, Martha; their children Nicholas (Laura,) Bryan, and Libbylyn; grandchildren Jonathan, Richard and Jennifer; his sister Tama and his sister Terry (Robert) and his dear friend Rauland D. Pollard. He was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth "Jo" Thielen and her husband Donald Thielen.
In honor of Michael's generous spirit, donations can be made to your local food bank. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please feel free to share your remembrances and photos of Michael.
