Beloved husband of Elizabeth (1944-2018) for 52 years. Father of John, Anthony, and Mary, "Papa G" to granddaughters Lauren and Kate, and cousin to Liz.
A distinguished art historian and scholar, Michael passed away suddenly on 27 January in Canberra, Australia, aged 82.
Born in Stafford, England, Michael devoted his life to the study and teaching of art history, with a particular focus on classicism and the enduring legacy of Roman antiquities. Educated at the University of Manchester, he held the position of senior lecturer at the University of Leicester before being appointed the Sir William Dobell Professor and Chair of Art History at the Australian National University, a position he held from 1987 until his retirement in 2005.
As Emeritus Professor, he remained an active contributor to his field, continuing to research, write, and publish until shortly before his passing.
The family will hold a private cremation.
