Michael H. Groom, 89, passed away on January 5, 2026, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Born on November 21, 1936, in Brockton, Massachusetts, Michael led a life marked by service, dedication, and an enduring commitment to both his country and community.

Michael proudly served in the United States Navy for 32 years, rising to the esteemed rank of Master Chief. His military career was distinguished by assignments aboard destroyers and submarine tenders and included active duty during the Vietnam War. He held numerous posts across the globe: from Rota, Spain to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Newport, Rhode Island to Boston, Massachusetts; Norfolk, Virginia to Kings Bay, Georgia; and Port Canaveral and Orlando in Florida. One of his most impactful roles was serving as a company commander at boot camp in Orlando, where he helped shape the next generation of sailors with discipline and integrity.

Following his military retirement, Michael continued to serve others through education. He earned a B.S. in Business and Economics and later a Master's degree in Human Relations. He worked as a trainer for aspiring employees at the FPL Nuclear Power Plant before transitioning into teaching mathematics at Stuart Community High School—an alternative institution for troubled youth. There, he was affectionately known as "Mr. Mike," remembered fondly by students whose lives he touched with patience and encouragement. Even after leaving the classroom, Michael's commitment to education endured, as he volunteered at Jensen Beach Elementary School for an additional seven years, where he received the Martin County Volunteer of the Year award.

Michael's devotion extended beyond his professional life into his spiritual community. A faithful church member throughout his life in Jensen Beach, Orlando, and New Smyrna Beach, he taught Sunday School classes, sang joyfully in church choirs, served on numerous committees, and participated actively in service initiatives that uplifted those around him.

He also embraced life with enthusiasm outside of work and worship. A passionate athlete well into his later years, Michael ran recreationally and competed in marathons and triathlons. He once rode his bicycle from Tampa to Orlando—a testament to his determination and zest for life. He enjoyed tennis and pickleball matches with friends and found joy on the dance floor through square dancing. Ever eager to learn new things, he took up playing the piano and organ later in life.

Michael was an avid sports fan who cheered faithfully for the Boston Red Sox and Celtics as well as collegiate teams like Notre Dame and Duke University.

Michael was also a dual citizen of the United States and Ireland, a heritage that held deep meaning for him. He cherished meeting his Irish family and traveled to Ireland many times, forming lasting connections and memories that enriched his life.

Michael shared 65 loving years of marriage with his devoted wife, Donna. Michael and Donna were married on June 11, 1960, and together built a life rooted in faith, family, and service.

He is lovingly remembered by his beautiful bride Donna Groom; daughter Kelle Groom; son Cory Groom; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A man of unwavering faith, boundless energy, and deep compassion for others, Michael H. Groom leaves behind a legacy of service that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
