Michael J. Hanken passed away peacefully at the age of 69 on February 16, 2026 at his home in Lakeland, FL. Mike is fondly remembered for his compassion, intelligence, loyalty, sense of humor, musical talent, artistic enthusiasm, and genuine curiosity about life. His legacy lives on in all the lives he touched.

Born on September 1, 1956, Mike grew up in Brentwood, NY. In his late teens, Mike's adventurous spirit led him to travel to New Mexico, the Southwest and eventually settled in Colorado for a while in the 1970s. He served in the US Army 1975-1978, which included tours of duty in Korea & Alaska. After completing military service, Mike settled in Lakeland, FL where he spent the remainder of his life.

Mike graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in Elementary Education. His career opportunities were diverse and included teaching, homebuilding, aircraft manufacturing, professional dance instructor, customer service manager, and the solar energy field. Mike excelled at whatever he pursued - accomplishments include National Amateur Ballroom Dance Champion and an inventor of a unique under-roof solar water heating system.

Mike's life centered around spending time with beloved friends and family, especially his sons, Philip & James, who meant the world to him. He enjoyed daily walks around the lake, biking, boating, and golf outings. But Mike was most passionate about music and his weekly jam sessions with the band "Manhattan Noon", which included best friends Bill, Susan & Steve, along with other bandmates Barry, Monica & Arynne.

Loving father of Philip & James. Cherished brother of Larry (Kathy), Steven, Susan, Gerry (Pennie) Joanne, and Paul (Debra). Affectionately nicknamed "Mean Uncle Mike" of many nieces & nephews. Dear cousin to the wonderful Bourke family. Preceded in death by his devoted parents, Ellen & Philip.

Military Interment Ceremony on April 17, 2026, 2 pm, at Bushnell National Cemetery, FL. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm on April 18, 2026 at the home of Bill Lippy & Lolly Renfroe, 301 E. Palm Dr., Lakeland, FL. Food and beverages will be provided.
