Michael C. Houston, lovingly known to family and friends as “Micola,” passed away on February 16, 2026. A longtime resident of Yuba City, California, Michael also held a deep love for the island of Maui, Hawaii, where he found peace in the ocean air and beauty in the sunsets.
Michael was born November 2, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, the second of eight children born into an Air Force family. His early life took him around the world, experiencing diverse art and cultures that stayed with him in spirit and would later be reflected throughout his own artistic career.
He graduated from Wheatland High School in Wheatland, California. He received his Associate of Arts degree in Photography Liberal Arts from Yuba College and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, in Photography and Graphic Arts. His work was featured in prestigious exhibitions including Art Maui in the Kazuma International Gallery and exhibitions at The Theater Gallery in Yuba City, California.
Michael owned and operated Houston ARF, an Alta Regional Residential Home for developmentally disabled adults, for over 20 years. He was a compassionate advocate for that community and the organizations that supported them, dedicating much of his life to service and care for others.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Rugen H. Sr. and Evelyn L Houston, his brother, Herbert M. Houston, and niece Alicia M Nobles.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Kelly-Houston, his son, Michael Houston (Heather) step-daughter, Tatjana Wren (Jackson), brothers, Rugen Houston (Taeko), Anthony Houston (Shelly), Mark Houston (Barbara), Stephen Houston (Alla), and Gregory Houston (Caira); his sister Theresa Houston, sister-in-law Tracy Houston, his five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, whom he adored.
Michael’s quiet strength, gentle humor, artistic spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family will be remembered always. Though he may be gone from our sight, he will forever remain in our hearts - in every shared story, every sunset watched in silence, and every act of love passed from one generation to the next.
Michael's Celebration of Life will be held on March 29th at 1pm
