Michael was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to Margaret and Robert Jansen. As a toddler, he and Margaret moved to Nigeria for his father's work. In 1953, after Margaret's remarriage to Victor Schut, the family emigrated to Calgary, Canada where he spent his childhood. As an adult, he mostly travelled the world, satisfying his insatiable wanderlust. He certainly lived life on his own terms. Eventually he settled in his favourite city, Vancouver, where he resided until his death.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Victor, and survived by sisters Laurie Schut, Sheila Schut-McLean (Norman), and Victoria Schut (Walter).
The family would like to thank AgeCare Lakeview's staff (Vancouver) for their many years of Michael's care. Also, Sheila and Victoria would like to thank Vancouver General Hospital, Blackmore for the empathy and kindness afforded them both prior to and after his death.
A small memorial will be held in Vancouver in early February. If any friends would like to attend, please contact Victoria for details.
