Michael Newman

Mr. Michael Lawrence "Mike" Newman, age 77, passed away on January 6, 2026, in Wasilla, Alaska. Born on January 13, 1948, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Mike lived a life marked by service, love, and a spirit that touched all who knew him.

Mike proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was an observer aboard the OH-6A Helicopter (Cayuse), affectionately known as the LOACH or Little Bird, with C-Troop 1/9th Calvary Scouts.
He worked the majority of his career with the State of Alaska Corrections until his retirement.

On May 23, 1997, Mike married the love of his life, Janet Louise (Plants) Newman. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together they built a life filled with cherished memories.

Mike was a proud father to three daughters: Shonda Marie (Erick) Erickson of Wasilla, Alaska; Jennifer Leigh (Don) Allphin of Manila, Utah; and Antoinette (Brad) Redford of Eagle Mountain, Utah—whom he was honored to consider as his own. He deeply loved his six grandchildren: Janessa and Kaz Erickson; Ember Burnum; and Kenzie, Ashlynn, and Owen Allphin. Additionally, he held a special place in his heart for five honorary grandchildren: Owen, Jaeger, Lucy, Luke, and Savannah Redford.

He is also survived by his three sisters: Christine (Lee) Edwards of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mayo (David) Melton of Charleston, Illinois; and Bille Jo (Bob) Traut of Palmer, Alaska. He was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence Wilke Newman and Willie Belle (Sorrells) Newman.

Known for being truly one of a kind, Mike’s genuine smile and mischievous glint in his eyes left an indelible impression on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.

May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 13, 2026, from 01:00 PM to 05:00 PM at Grace Life Community Church 900 N. Leatherleaf Loop. Wasilla,Ak. After a brief service, we invite friends and family to share their memories of Mike. Join us in the reception hall for refreshments and finger foods.
