Michael Peter Washo, 79, passed away suddenly on January 28, 2026, leaving his family and friends heartbroken and still trying to catch their breath. His passing was a shock to all who loved him, and the emptiness he leaves behind is a measure of how big a role he played in our lives.
Born on October 5, 1946, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Mike lived a life defined by devotion to family, service to his country, hard work, and a generosity of spirit that showed up in ways both grand and wonderfully ordinary.
Mike served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Though he did not agree with the war, the experience shaped his sense of duty and strength. After his service, he built a successful career as a salesman before becoming an entrepreneur. Many knew Mike best through his cigar shop in Manchester, CT, a place that became more than a business. It was a gathering spot where friendships were formed, stories were shared, and Mike's humour and generosity toward his clientele left a lasting impression on everyone who walked through the door.
Mike met Janet at work, and it was love at first sight. Together they shared 56 years of marriage, traveling with friends, creating a beautiful home, and raising their family. Through life's many joys and heartaches, they remained devoted to one another. Their family lovingly describes their relationship as a real-life Notebook—a love story marked by loyalty, tenderness, and enduring commitment.
A dedicated son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, Mike was steadfast, lighthearted, and deeply loyal to those he loved. Family was the foundation of his life. He played an irreplaceable role in his grandchildren's lives whether he was watching them perform on the field or on the stage, picking them up at the bus stop, enjoying productions at the Bushnell, orchestrating elaborate water gun fights, or sharing rounds of golf. While these memories are etched forever in their minds, the lessons he taught them about family and commitment will be his greatest legacy.
Bitten by the golf bug as a teenager, Mike's lifelong passion for the game began as a caddy at his local course in Pennsylvania. He will be missed by many at Cedar Knob, especially by his dear friends Moose (Dave), Billy and Doug with whom he shared countless rounds and enduring friendships.
Mike was quick-witted and sharp-tongued in the best way, and he loved a good ribbing. His sarcasm was always delivered with a laugh, a twinkle in his eye, and just enough charm to ensure you knew it was all love.
His presence will be missed beyond measure, and his legacy will live on through the family and friends who were fortunate enough to know him.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Janet Washo; his son, Michael Washo and his wife Molly of Portland, Maine, and their children, Mick and Abby; his daughter, Katharine Murphy and her husband Chris Canniff of Tolland, CT, and their children, Angela, Joe, and Christopher; his sister, Ellen Hier of Montreal, Canada; and many relatives and friends who will miss him — and his commentary — dearly.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Cedar Knob Golf Course in Somers, CT.
