Mickie Kathleen Flagg (Johnston), age 71, passed away on November 18, 2019, in Corning, California. Born on May 7, 1948, in El Centro, California. Mickie lived a life defined by compassion, dedication, and unwavering love for her family.
Mickie pursued a career in nursing, earning her degree with the class of 1974-75. In 1977, she moved to Oroville, California, where she began a long and meaningful tenure as an LVN at Oroville Hospital. Her commitment to caring for others extended beyond the hospital walls; after stepping away from nursing for a few years to work with Butte County, she returned to the field she loved. She later served at Biggs-Gridley Memorial Hospital and Leo Chesney Correctional Facility before retiring. Throughout her career, Mickie formed deep bonds with colleagues and friends—relationships she cherished and often fondly recalled. Her stories of shared laughter and camaraderie were a testament to the joy she found in her work and the people around her.
Mickie had many passions that reflected her generous spirit. A talented seamstress and crocheter, she delighted in creating handmade gifts for those she loved. Her creativity also found expression through tireless support of her daughter's high school band activities at Las Plumas High School. As a dedicated band booster during Stephanie's time on the Auxiliary Team, Mickie sewed uniforms and costumes, made chili for concession stands at bingo fundraisers, and was a fixture at every competition, performance, and home game—cheering loudly and proudly from the sidelines.
Mickie's love for her grandchildren was boundless. She welcomed Zachary in 1990 and Shelby in 1993—affectionately calling them Buddy and Cricket—and became their beloved Gammie. From the very beginning, she was a constant presence in their lives. Weekends and summers were often spent at her home, filled with laughter, warmth, and countless road trips that created lasting memories. In 2014, she welcomed her great-grandson Demitri into the world with the same fierce devotion and open-hearted love that defined her role as a mother and grandmother.
Beyond her professional life, Mickie was deeply devoted to her family. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Waugh; her grandson Zachary Solomon and his girlfriend Nicole LaJeunesse; granddaughter Shelby Morse and her husband Matthew Morse; and great-grandson Demitri Morse. She also leaves behind her brothers Steven Johnston (and his wife Pamela), Charles Johnston; niece Stacy Johnston, Bernie Johnston (and his wife Susan) and their family; and cousins Linda Neil, Michelle Neil, Brianna Blackmer, and Renea, Ankur & Maya Sinha.
She was preceded in death by her mother Marion Elizabeth Johnston; grandmother Mildred Grace Elliott; and aunt Dorothy L. Davis.
To those who knew her, Mickie's love was never in question—it radiated from everything she said and did. She lived with clarity about what mattered most: family. Her legacy is one of selfless devotion, joyful generosity, and unconditional love.
May her memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
In keeping with her wishes, her ashes were scattered as a tree was planted at her family home—a living tribute in her memory.
