MOIRA ESTHER ACHINAPURA
January 28, 1928 – February 12, 2026
Moira Esther Achinapura of Delray Beach and Naples, Florida, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, at the age of 98.
Early Years:
Moira was born January 28, 1928, in London, England. Her parents were George John Peacock and Lily Churchill Peacock (née Churchill). She grew up on Somermead Road, Bedminster, Bristol, England.
Like many young English children during World War II, she was evacuated to the countryside. Moira was billeted with Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins of Truro, Cornwall, and attended a small two room school called Chevelah, alongside her dear friend Doreen Brunt and Doreen’s younger brother Brian.
Moira married Nicolas Ktoris Georgiou in Bristol at St Mary Redcliffe Church in December 1945, and together they had four children. Nicolas was a Greek-Cypriot from Neon Chorion, Kythrea, Cyprus so Moira promptly learned to speak Greek.
United States:
On May 31, 1954, Moira and her family arrived in the United States on the S. S. Olympia. They expected to settle in San Francisco, California, but ultimately made their home in New York and New Jersey. Her marriage to Nicolas ended in divorce in 1966.
Moira married Paul James Achinapura on December 8, 1968. They lived in New Jersey and later Florida until Paul’s death on May 28, 2002. Moira was warmly welcomed into the Achinapura family, including Paul’s mother and his siblings Frank, Dick, John, Joey, Isabel, Colleen, Annette, and Rose, along with their spouses.
Notwithstanding her divorce, Moira maintained warm ongoing relationships with the Greek Cypriot family and friends of Nicolas, her first husband. Among those are Andy and Marie Georgiou and their children Sotiris and Petros; the “Georgiou brothers” Gus, Andy, Polyvios, Renos and their wives and families; Nicolas and Linda Ktoris and family; Diane and Phil Hughes and family and numerous others.
Moira was especially proud to become an American citizen in 1973.
Music:
Moira was musically gifted and loved to play the piano. In later years she frequently volunteered to play at social gatherings and community events. She remembered fondly her childhood piano lessons at Miss Cottrell’s home on Hall Street in Bedminster, Bristol.
Work Years:
Moira was also mathematically gifted and enjoyed a long professional career. During the 1970s and 1980s, she worked in accounting for various insurance companies, including Underwood Insurance Company in New York City, where her daughter Nita worked during summers.
From the 1990s through the early 2000s, Moira served as Comptroller and Office Manager of Book Sales Inc. in Secaucus, New Jersey.
Moira was a very intelligent and independent woman and an excellent role model for her children and grandchildren.
Travel Years:
Moira and Paul traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States. One of the family’s most cherished memories was a trip to Las Vegas in 2000 that included all her children, their spouses, and grandchildren.
She was also an original member of Cosmopolitan Associates, an organization established for English war brides in the United States. Moira would jokingly measure her savings account by how many round trip plane tickets home to England it equaled.
Despite work and travel, Moira never missed a grandchild’s birthday or family holiday celebration. She understood the importance of being present and was always there with a smile and a gift.
Moira spent the last twenty-one years of her life at Abbey Delray (Life Space) in Delray Beach, Florida, where she was an active and enthusiastic participant in community events and activities. She later resided at The Fairways in Naples, Florida. She celebrated her 98th birthday on January 28, 2026.
