Monica Lynn McGill

Monica Lynn McGill was born June 23, 1970, in Washington, DC, the second child of Georgia Lee Schumpert and Herman Abraham McGill. Her arrival was a source of great joy and blessings to her parents and all who loved her.

Growing up, she was a Girl Scout and took dance and piano classes. She attended Alexander Shepherd Elementary School, Alice Deal Junior High School, and Woodrow Wilson High School, where she was a member of the basketball team and sang in the gospel choir. She went on to attend and graduate from Howard University.
Following her graduation, Monica became a Special Education teacher. She worked in the District of Columbia Public School System, then at the National Children’s Center, and ultimately in Montgomery County Public Schools at Farquhar Middle School. She finished her career as a Special Education Resource and Transition Support Teacher, touching countless lives with her compassion, patience, and unwavering commitment to her students.

Monica’s faith was the foundation of her life. She grew up in Turner Memorial African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Washington, DC and later became a devoted member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. She served faithfully in numerous ministries, including the African Heritage Ministry, the Rev. Karen L. Young Women’s Ministry, the Lay Organization, the Communications Ministry, the Nettie Norris Missionary Society, the Young Adult Choir, the Praise Team, the Great Commission Evangelism Ministry, and the Burning Bush Ministry. She was especially passionate about the Sherry Ann Jamison Annual Backpack Giveaway, named in honor of her late aunt, Sherry Jamison, the ministry’s former president.

A lover of fashion, Monica was known for her vibrant wardrobe of African print outfits, hats, and shoes for every occasion. She cherished her family deeply, often checking in on cousins with calls, texts, and messages filled with scripture or encouragement. Her kindness and thoughtfulness brightened the days of many.
Monica also expressed her love through cooking and baking. She delighted in preparing meals and desserts for birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. She would even bake and ship cakes across the country—simply because she cared.

Monica was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves to cherish her memory: sisters Vicki McGill and Ruth Salley; Goddaughter LaCottia Jamison-Morris; God brother Burrell Jamison; Uncles Raleigh (Ruth), Sam “See” McGill, Willie Lindsey, and Preston Jamison; Aunts Patricia McGill White, Mary Lee Lindsey, and Nellie Cooper McGill Knox; Stepchildren Terrence, Aneika, Amealia and Chiro Lewis; and a host of close cousins, extended family members, and friends who will forever hold her in their hearts. A Visitation will be held on February 23, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Colesville United Methodist Church 52 Randolph Road
