Morton “Mort” Cohen, a lifelong resident of San Francisco, California, passed away peacefully in his home on January 7, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on August 5, 1927, to Alfred and Helen Cohen, Mort was the second of three children and grew up in the city that would always be his home.
Mort lived a full and vibrant life centered on family, friendship, and an enduring curiosity about the world around him. Known for his kindness, warmth, easy smile, and positive outlook, he created a sense of welcome wherever he went. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with the people he loved.
Mort was an Eagle Scout, graduated from Lowell High School and earned a B.A. from Stanford University. He served with distinction in both the Merchant Marines during World War II and the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mort’s first marriage to Doris Fine, with whom he had four children, ended in divorce. In 1981 he married Janice Rubin, and together they shared a life filled with love, partnership, and adventure. Mort was preceded in death by his beloved wife Janice and is survived and lovingly remembered by his children David, Fred, Steven, and Laurie Cohen and their spouses; and by Janice’s children, Gary and Debra Rubin and their spouses. His legacy continues through his eleven grandchildren and fourteen great‑grandchildren, who knew him as a gentle, supportive, and playful presence in their lives.
For more than twenty years, Mort owned and operated Cowan‑Frank Manufacturing Co (also known as Yours of San Francisco), specializing in junior and women’s fashion. When the apparel industry shifted production to lower‑cost regions, Mort embarked on a new career, co-owning and managing with Janice the Land, Sea, and Air Travel Agency for over four decades. Helping others explore the world brought him great joy. Although he traveled widely, his greatest happiness was always returning home to share stories, meals, and laughter with family and friends.
He is predeceased by his brother Alvin. He is survived by his sister, Susan Oscherwitz and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were brightened by his wisdom, humor, and enthusiasm for life. Each of them carries a part of his spirit forward.
May the memory of Mort’s long and well‑lived life bring comfort to all who knew him, and may his example continue to inspire lives filled with love, adventure, and genuine connection. He will be forever missed, and the time shared with him will always be a blessing. In the words of Shakespeare, “May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”
