Myra Gettys Mackem, 85, passed away on January 17, 2026, in Louisville, KY. Born on July 21, 1940, Myra graduated from Collegiate High School of Louisville and later attended Reed College.
Myra spent many years in various positions in the mortgage banking field, but was never a banker at heart. She was, however, known to say that her true calling was living in a little cottage on the beach and collecting seashells.
Myra's passion was taking care of things. Her children and grandchildren were always her greatest love, but she cared for just about every living thing. Being chosen as one of Myra's dogs or cats was like winning the pet lottery.
Gardening was also one of Myra's loves. Her knowledge of plants was extraordinary, and her yard was always beautiful. Her yard would become downright spectacular in the spring when her plants sprouted and the flowers bloomed. Few things made her happier than playing in a little honest garden dirt and tending to her plants. Anyone or anything being cared for by Myra was truly blessed.
Myra is survived by her sons, Eric and Charles, her brothers, James and Briggs, her sister Helen, daughters in law Lisa and Milissa, her grandsons Ryan and Kyle, her great-grandson James, and many nephews and nieces, but she was especially close to her niece, Annie. Myra is also survived by her dear and longtime friend Gary Wright.
She was preceded in death by her son, Walter, her brother, Charles, her sister-in-law Vesta and her niece Vesta.
Myra's favorite time of year was spring, when the landscape turns green, plants grow and flowers bloom. A celebration of life service is planned for this spring. Friends and family will be invited to gather and honor her memory.
