Nancy Lynn Batchelor Sellas was born in San Bernardino on July 1, 1944. She was the second child of 0’Neal and Frances Batchelor. They resided in San Bernardino on Mayfield and later moved to D street. From the moment she arrived she brought grace and joy to her family.
Her childhood years were spent happily on the beach in Balboa and Laguna with her family. Nancy was a water baby. She enjoyed swimming and fishing and beachcombing. Her happy place was in the ocean and enjoying the beauty of the sea.
After graduating from San Bernardino High School, Nancy attended the University of the Pacific where she studied speech pathology. She later went on to get her teaching credential from Cal State Long Beach. While in college, Nancy participated in intramural sports and was active in Theta Sorority. A natural athlete and quick witted, Nancy had an ease and grace that made everyone around her better.
After returning to San Bernardino to teach elementary school, she married the love of her life, Reggie Sellas on February 26, 1967. She and Reggie had two children, Katie Sellas Van Harten and Peter Sellas. She also had a beautiful granddaughter, Alexa who was a joy in her life.
While Katie and Peter were young, Nancy worked with her husband Reggie at their family restaurant, Queens, a local fixture in the community. Later they expanded the business to include catering and her style and flair along with Reggie’s cooking expertise soon made them the toast of the town. Nancy and Reggie’s hospitality is legendary among their friends and family and evokes fond memories of happy times. After many successful years catering magical events, they purchased the Sycamore Inn in Rancho Cucamonga before relocating to Laguna Beach.
A deeply spiritual person, Nancy held many positions at First Presbyterian Church in San Bernardino including Deacon. She was a member of a Bible group for her entire adult life, served on various committees and went on a yearly retreat with friends from church to Companions retreat in Malibu. In 2003 after moving to Laguna Beach to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter, she found her church home at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church where she continued her service to others. Nancy served as Senior Warden of the Vestry, assisted with the altar adornment throughout the liturgical year and conducted the Tuesday Healing services as well as monthly services of Taizé.
A kind, loving and giving person, Nancy made the world a better place. She took everything in stride and was able to see the bright side of life even in tough times. She was known for her hospitality and her ability to make everyone feel seen and heard. She was a giver who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her husband and partner of 58 years, Reggie Sellas, she is survived by her daughter Katie (Kenton), her son Peter (Erin), her granddaughter Alexa, her brother Steve, her sister-in-law Marilyn, sisters-in-law Vassie, Demi, Kelly, Annie, brothers-in-law Jimmy and Sam and several nieces and nephews.
