Neal Ajit Bakare, of Houston, Texas, passed away on April 9, 2026, at the age of 47. Born on March 30, 1979, Neal lived a life defined by love for his family, intellectual curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the people and places that shaped him.

Though his career and family life were rooted in Houston, Neal grew up in Eunice, Louisiana, a place that remained close to his heart. He carried with him a lasting love for Louisiana’s soulful culture, food, and countryside.

Neal’s keen intellect and natural curiosity led him to Yale University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in economics. In 2003, he returned to Louisiana and his favorite city, New Orleans, to pursue his Juris Doctor from Tulane University School of Law. There, he met the love of his life, Nicole Shirley Bakare (née Muendelein). What began in law school grew into a devoted partnership, rooted in deep love and a rich life built together. Neal and Nicole moved together to Houston after law school, where Neal had a successful career as a corporate attorney and earned respect for his expertise and thoughtful approach to his work.

Above all else, Neal was a devoted husband, father, and son. He is survived by his beloved wife of 17 years Nicole and their three children, Cameron Kurt (13), Leighton Meena (10), and Connor Neal (5), as well as his parents Ajit and Dr. Meena Bakare (née Vasudeo). Neal found his greatest joy in being a father—snuggling with his children, watching them play sports, and listening to their full, contagious belly laughs. From the very beginning, Neal embraced fatherhood with enthusiasm and pride, insisting after an early newborn photo shoot that the photographer print the largest picture possible so he could display it prominently at home.

Neal’s warmth and genuine interest in others made him someone people were naturally drawn to. He never met a stranger—he could strike up a conversation with anyone and had a remarkable ability to remember the details of people’s lives. Friends describe him as kind, thoughtful, and having a natural wit that put others at ease, someone who truly cared and made others feel seen.

Neal had many passions, including spending cherished time outdoors fishing and playing tennis. Neal also collected watches and delighted in movies of all kinds. Early in his relationship with Nicole, the two spent countless evenings choosing movies at Blockbuster—so many that Neal worked his way through nearly all the inventory. Though a proud Louisiana man, Neal embraced Nicole’s deep Michigan roots, becoming an enthusiastic supporter of University of Michigan athletics and Detroit sports teams. Neal was also proud of his Indian heritage, which remained an important part of his identity throughout his life.

Neal will forever be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered first and foremost as a loving husband, father, and son, whose presence brought warmth, humor, and connection to those around him.

Visitation is planned for Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 5 PM until 8 PM and for Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 9:30 AM until 11 AM. The service will immediately follow on Thursday at 11 AM. Both visitation and the service will be in the Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel at 1101 Antoine Drive, Houston, Texas 77055, with interment thereafter at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery, and a luncheon at 1 PM.
