Norma Jean Gray, 83, of Afton, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, in Waynesboro, VA. She was blessed to be surrounded by the love of her family. Born on March 31, 1942, in Tennessee, she brought warmth and joy to those around her throughout her long and spirited life.
Norma was the beloved daughter of Vistia and T.R. Salyer. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Walter S. Gray; her brothers Kenneth, Bud, and JW; and sisters Dana, Alice, and Delphia. Despite the many losses she endured over the years, Norma remained a pillar of strength for her family.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter MayLynda; sons Timothy and Donnie; grandsons David and Cody; and great-granddaughters Luci and Hadley. Norma also held a special place in her heart for her many nieces, nephews, and in-laws who were dear to her.
Norma's life was marked by resilience and an unwavering spirit. Even as she faced serious health challenges later in life, she met each day with courage and grace. Her hardworking nature was matched only by her bubbly personality—she had a gift for making friends wherever she went. Sociable and loyal to those she cared about, Norma left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She is leaving behind many friends that were loved and will miss her greatly.
She found joy in life's simple pleasures: walking barefoot through the grass, hunting for treasures at yard sales (never one to pass one up), tending to her beautiful flower gardens, or spending time at the beach—her happy place. These passions reflected a woman who embraced life fully and found beauty in everyday moments.
May the memory of Norma Jean Gray bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. A Celebration of Life will be held on February 28, 2026, at 02:00 PM at McDow Funeral Home 1701 W. Main Street, Waynesboro, VA. A graveside service will happen at a later date.
