Norman Eugene Jukes, age 88, passed away on January 15, 2026, in Castro Valley, California. A longtime resident of Burlingame, California, Norman lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a lifelong passion for aviation.
Norman was born on March 27, 1937, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to John Eugene Jukes and Norma Pearl Jukes. He graduated from Capuchino High School in 1955 and went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree from the College of San Mateo in 1958, beginning a path that reflected both his love of learning and technical skill.
Norman enjoyed a remarkable 42-year career with United Airlines, serving with dedication in Engine Technical Services as a Senior Staff Representative for Engineering. He proudly served in the United States Air Force Reserves for 22 years, including being called to active duty during the Vietnam War. His service to his country was a source of great pride and remained an important part of his identity throughout his life.
Aviation was more than a career interest for Norman—it was his passion. In retirement, he generously volunteered at the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, where he worked in the restoration shop restoring aircraft engines for display and was a member of the Society for Aviation History where he also served as president from 2005-2006.
Norman was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Forster Jukes, in 2004 and by his son, James Robert Jukes in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Vallarie Kilkenny-Jukes; his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Robert Simoni; and his sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Randy McDougall.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on January 23, 2026 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 480 San Anselmo Avenue, San Bruno.
Norman will be remembered for his quiet dedication, his service to country, and his enduring love of flight.
