Norman Scott Kominsky, 83, of Bonita Springs, Florida, formerly of Bangor, Maine, passed away on November 12th, 2025, surrounded by family.

He was born on September 8th, 1942, in Bangor, Maine, the son of the late Mildred (nee Striar) and Dr. Howard Kominsky.

Norman is survived by his wife, Karen Kominsky; daughter, Reva Kominsky and son-in-law Brent Elwood; son, Dr. Andrew Kominsky and daughter-in-law Angelica Kominsky; sister, Barbara Burry; grandchildren, Brigham, Noah, Nina, Ryder, Jonah, Joshua, Lauren, and Becca; a much loved dog, Pazu; and two cats, Ollie and Otto. He is also remembered fondly by many extended family members and close friends.

Norman graduated from Bangor High School before completing his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Boston University in 1964. He then earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1966. He returned to Maine to work in the family textile business, spending many years managing Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna and Striar Textile Mill in Orono.

In his late 40s, Norman embarked on a second career and earned his law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 1994. He practiced law in Bangor for many years, handling family, business, and criminal matters. He also served as a Guardian ad Litem, advocating for vulnerable children. Norman was known for his sharp mind, his direct and plain-spoken style, and especially his love of a good argument. Spirited and thoughtful debate was his preferred sport, and he brought humor and conviction to every conversation.

After retiring at age 65, Norman began living full time in Bonita Springs, a place he had enjoyed for many years. He relished the warm weather, the wildlife, and the opportunity to spend time outdoors. It was in Bonita Springs that he met his devoted wife, Karen.

Norman's life was full of adventure, including white-water rafting, scuba diving, kayaking, and boating. He loved to travel and explored many countries throughout his life. He was an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy, and greatly enjoyed bluegrass, folk, and country music. He had a considerable sweet tooth. A couple of favorites were Pavlova, often made by Andrew and Angelica, and Kichel, a traditional Jewish cookie that he first enjoyed as a young child when baked by his beloved aunts.

Norman was a skilled athlete, particularly in racquetball and tennis. When arthritis limited use of his right hand, he taught himself to play tennis left-handed. When tennis and golf became prohibitive, he turned to pool aerobics, then dedicated himself to boxing and physical therapy. His determination was matched only by his playful, childlike qualities and his affectionate teasing of those he loved.

Norman was a devoted family member and friend. Despite the challenges of recent years, he continued to live with curiosity, resilience, and his distinctive sense of humor. We wish we had more time with him.

A celebration of Norman's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice or any organization that supports Parkinson's disease research.
